Rishikesh IndiaRishikesh is located in the northern part in Indian state of Uttaranchal. It is situated 42 Km from the state capital Dehradun and 25 Km upstream from Haridwar. Being a popular pilgrimage site it is also known as   'City Of Saints' Rishikesh stands at an altitude of 356 meters above sea level and lies on the edge of holy river Ganga. It is considered as one of the oldest cities in India. According to some mythologies it is believed that Raibhav Rishi performed several penance here for many years, as a reward to his peanance God appeared in a form of a Rishikesh (saint), and then the name Rishikesh derived form there.

Rishikesh has numerous ashrams, some of which are internationally recognized as center of philosophical studies, yoga and meditation. . It is a base for CHAR DHAM pilgrimage, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. These four places are said to be must visit place for all at least once in their lifetime. Rishikesh lies on the way to the Sikh shrine at Hemkund Sahib.

Har ki Pauri is also a place where tourist reaches to perform ritual bathing on the bank of river Ganga to wash away the sins to attain MOKSHA .It is the place where the Amrit fell when lord Shiva drank the venom that came out during the churning of the ocean. This place is considered the most sacred Ghat of Haridwar. U.P tourism organizes an international yoga week here every year in February. For the adventure lovers there are opportunities for white water rafting on the river Ganga

How to Reach Rishikesh :

By Air: Nearest airport is Jolly grant which is 18 km away from Rishikesh and is situated in Dehradun. Indian Airlines has five flights a week from Delhi to the Jolly Grant Airport.

By Train: Rishikesh railway station  has direct links with the  major cities of India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Indore, Jaipur, Ahmedabad. The nearest railway station is Haridwar

By Road: Rishikesh is well connected to many cities in the region like Agra, Chandigardh , Dehradun, Kullu Manali and Shimla.

Places to see in Rishikesh -

Triveni Ghat In downtown rishikesh, the Terveni Ghat is an interesting place to be at dawn. This is believed to be the confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the Saraswati. Rivers. Devotees take a holy dip and offers prayers at the ghat. Pilgrims purify themselves in the Ganga at Treveni Ghat, offering milk and feeding the fish at dawn, and floating lamps after sunset for evening Ganga Aarti ceremony.

Ram jhula: A suspension bridge between the shivanand ashram and the Swarg ashram. It provides an alternative to a boat ride from one bank of the Ganga to another.

Bharat Mandir the Bharat Mandir is the oldest temple I rishikesh, near Triveni Ghat. This temple is dedicated to bharat, the younger brother of lord ram.

Shivanand ashram near shivanand jhula, shivanand ashram was founded by Swami Shivananda and is under the auspices of the divine life society. This is well known spiritual centre renowned for its discourses on spirituality. There are yoga classes daily, with courses from three days to two months.

Laxhman Jhula 5 km north of rishikesh is the place where Shri Laxman is said o has performed tapa. The laxman temple was built in his memory. Till 1889, there was just ahnagig jute Rope Bridge without pillars. The same was later re built with iron ropes. The laxman jhula area is very picturesque with the best views, and quieter than the own centre. Close to the eastern end of the laxman jhula

Neel Kanth Mahadev the four hour walk from laxman jhula on the east bank. Neelkanth (blue throat) is another name for lord Shiva. The trek up to the temple gives everybody a wide fantastic view angles view of the Himalayan peaks, babhar forest and the plain below. The temple is situated at the height of 5,500 ft. above sea level and is about 12 km from laxman jhula.
